Few things in the world impact us as much as the external environment that we create for ourselves. Do we eat good food? Exercise enough? Practice de-stressing after a tough day? Maybe do a little yoga or pilates? We have a great amount of control over what we expose ourselves to. Granted, there are many things that we do not have control over, but our external surroundings can be partially influenced by what we choose to put there. One of those influences is what we listen to. We can watch television all day and listen to talking heads, we can listen to people arguing or dogs barking, or we can listen to music that we know will influence our mood and our psyche in whatever manner we desire. Music has a direct on/off switch with our moods, our mind and our body. There is a connection that even scientists can't totally understand but know exists. All the success stories with music therapy validate the profound impact music can have on your mind, soul and spirit. Music therapy is used to calm agitation, work through deeper issues in a non-threatening way and is very successful with patients with mental illnesses that are otherwise unreachable. The impact of music on your mind, soul and spirit is a reflection of what you need at the time. You have to know what works for you, what calms you, what excites you, what gets your heart rate up and then use it to your benefit. Pick the external environment that works for you, in this case, pick music that will influence you in the way that you desire. You want to relax after a long day? Maybe something a bit softer works for you. (maybe rap relaxes you, only you know). Want to work out with a bit more intensity? Maybe some fast dance or electric music works for you. Listen to your body and your heart rate, nothing tells you more what is working and not working for what you are trying to accomplish than your own body. Music is an often untapped resource for us to use in our quest for balance. Understanding its place and impact and then using it to your full advantage will only add to your life and hopefully your completeness. Music is a very easy additive to your external environment that can really benefit you. Find your gear and ride it, let music have a positive power on your mind, soul, spirit and psyche. |
